I just bought a HOT.  PINK.  LINCOLN.  BUST.
It looks awesome, and I think is about as "me" as you can get!
:-D

ETA (It's all [info]quincy134's fault):  Lincoln + gay bar =  THIS  (Hysterically funny, but pretty much NSFW)

Thanks, [info]isabelladangelo!  :-P

Do any of you (especially in the DC area) know where one might be able to get a load of fire wood in the next week or so?
Yes, I know it's June, and yes, I do actually need this!

And!
The job offer I got today was a major ego boost, not just because OMG it was a job offer, but because they guy who called me (who had been one of the people interviewing me yesterday) said that it had been "a very easy decision" and that the decision had been made pretty much right away after the interviews were completed that day and was unanimous between the three people who had interviewed me.
Damn, my poor bruised ego needed that!  :-P

Also, I just took a second shower.  I got out of the actual shower just a little bit ago (working at Mt. V. always makes me feel GROSS!), but it's been storming pretty much all evening, and then all of a sudden it started DUMPING.  Like, solid wall of water pouring down on to my balcony from the one above it.  Almost washed my poor plants away (not sure if the poor abused tomato plant it going to recover from this one!), and I ran out to move them away from the edge of the balcony and out of the main onslaught of the water--and got soaked again in the process.  Wheee!  Nothing like a shower of nasty DC rainwater!  ;-)

I HAVE A REAL FREAKING JOB!!!

I got the Aldie Mill job!
So starting next week, I will be the site supervisor for the Aldie Mill Historic Park in Aldie, VA (just west of Chantilly)
Woot!

(And I'm looking at apartments in the Dunn Loring/Vienna area, because doing an hour commute each way long term would probably kill me and/or my car)

About how much fabric does it require to make a Regency dress?  I know most of you are quite a bit smaller than me, but just a ballpark figure...

Also, totally unrelated:  finally managed to clip Max's claws (damn, those things were getting sharp!)--it's hard to keep a hold of 17 lbs of thrashing cat by yourself, but wrapping him in a towel makes a world of difference!  :-)  And the poor traumatized boy got treats, so he's fine now!  :-P

Wow.
I took 252 pictures over the course of the past three days
They've all now been uploaded to my computer, but there's still quite a bit of editing to do, so that won't get done until at least tomorrow.
But I had an AMAZING time at Costume Con (even with people wearing things that they *really* should not wear, not getting most of the entries in the sci fi and fantasy masquerade, and the wicked fucked up judging of the historical masquerade), and it was AWESOME to finally meet all of you in person!  (Let me know if I need to friend you, because I'm horrible at remembering everyone's LJ names!)
Also, I was SO inspired by the things that you all wore (and a few other costumes I saw!), and I'm seriously thinking about branching out into some new periods!  This weekend definitely helped me get my sewing mojo back!

It's going to be tough, though, having to get back into the real world...at least I get tomorrow/today (Monday) off to sleep in, run errands, and get caught up on life before having to go back to Mt. V. and the Carlyle House...gah

(Also, for those of you following along at home, I'd just like to add that I STILL have not heard from the Lincoln Cottage.  No idea what that means at this point)

(By Friday morning)

Stripey Polonaise (wearing on Friday):
-finish neckline and sleeve trim
-hem gown
-add loops for polonaise-ing

Gray Silk (wearing on Saturday):
-Switch out linen sleeve ruffles for organdy (so they will match the fichu)

Zone Front Jacket (this doesn't have to be totally done until Sunday...):
-make and tack in lining
-tack back the main fabric to reveal the striped zone

Misc.:
-add band to cap
-make a small wrist purse bc I've been too lazy to make pocket slits in my petticoats and gowns
-make a bum pad
-finish attaching crown of blue hat and attach brown ribbon
-collect hair supplies (curlers, bobby pins, brush, HAIRSPRAY)

And the fun part is?
I get to work at Mt. V. 8(AM!!!)-4:30pm both Tues and Wed, and the Carlyle House on Thurs.
Gah!

Holy balls.
*deep breath*

Yep, that's all the hair I just cut off all by myself!  I haven't gotten my hair cut in about two years, because I don't want to pay crazy city prices!  But my hair was getting way too long to put up easily (my default for when I'm running out the door, late to work--as usual), it looked ratty, it was going to be a bitch to dye (I'm debating:  go back to black before or after Costume Con?), and it was going to be hard to get into big 18th c. hair!  Now it's still plenty long enough to put up, while being far more managable!
Yay!

(Though I am a tiny bit perversely disappointed that I couldn't use "The Great Hair Disaster of 2009" as the title for this post...*snerk*  :-P)

Is it really weird that as soon as the weather starts warming up, I suddenly start craving home products that are spice (cinnamon, clove, etc) scented?  I was looking for body wash at Target today (and stocking up on my meds, so hopefully I'll be less bitchy--but also very poor--soon!), but the closest I could get was vanilla.  And Target didn't carry their gingerbread-scented line of air fresheners and candles and soap this X-mas!  Boo hiss!
So, any suggestions where I could candles or air fresheners or hand soap or body wash in, yes, March, to satisfy this craving?

I got home from work today and was greeted by the sounds of my upstairs neighbors having VERY enthusiastic sex.
I mean seriously, we do not have thin walls in this building--normally I can NEVER hear my neighbors on either side, or above!  So they must have been really freaking loud!

Good to know that my upstairs neighbor apparently gets laid at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon.

:-P

...anyone know of some good and CHEAP second-hand stores in the DC metro area?  My winter coat (among other things) is on its last legs, and there's no way I can afford a new one right now, even with sales.
I know there's tons of "trendy" second-hand stores in the District, but I need something that's actually *cheap*, not "look at how cool I am, buying second-hand/vintage to go with my Prada bag!"
Hrmph.

And while I'm thinking of it, any good places to get second-hand/used furniture for cheap?  Stuff that needs work is fine (probably even better than stuff that's in great shape, because then I can fix it up and make it my own!)  Yes, yes, I know about Craig's List...but 95% of the stuff on there is the crappy stuff (as opposed to the nice stuff) from Ikea.

30 January 2009 @ 06:05 pm
So, the Carlyle House has an event coming up next friday, and my friend H (who also works there) and I have been asked to work it in costume (since we both have dresses from the ball back in November), along with our usual reenactors.
This means making a few little changes to my gown.  The ball was 1780's, but the event at the Carlyle House is 1769.  So, no belt, and the sleeves need ruffles!
So I'VE BEEN SEWING!  (I know, try not to die of shock!)
And have I mentioned how much I LOVE making rolled hems?  Love, love, love, LOVE!  I'm almost done with the linen for my sleeve ruffles, so I'm also working on getting a neckerchief hemmed while I'm on a roll.
Yay!
I'm also hoping if there's time to throw a little trimming on the neckline and sleeves of my gown...I only have a little bit of the gown silk left, so we'll see if I have enough fabric or time!

Your result for The Steampunk Style Test...

The Aristocrat

75% Elegant, 28% Technological, 47% Historical, 36% Adventurous and 17% Playful!

You are the Aristocrat, the embodiment of steampunk elegance and poise. For you, dressing steampunk is first and foremost about simply looking good, with accessories and details to follow. However, this does not mean that you ignore the demands of creating a “steampunk look.” Your outfits weave together a balance between technology and style, and between period accuracy and beautiful anachronism. While your fashion inspiration may come from anywhere across the Victorian social spectrum, you always find a way to make your outfit beautiful. You will probably be found in the clothes of the steam age elite simply because of the greater elegance available to them. Chances are you dress this way because you like it, and you would still dress in this manner even if steampunk was not a popular interest.

Try our other Steampunk test here.

The staff of the IPO definitely spent most of today giggling because the quote the curator wants to use at the end of the Lincoln exhibit has the work "bosoms" in it.  Because we're definitely all 12.
